Why Digitalizing Your Closet Makes Sense

Giving your closet a serious digital upgrade can save you time and money.

In what is the perfect modern day answer to Clueless heroine Cher Horowitz's closet consolidating computer program, the LaKoketa app’s matching algorithm allows you to experiment with your wardrobe by mixing and matching your clothes or selecting the “what to wear” feature and having it select you an outfit for the day.

I recently digitalized my closet using the LaKoketa app and let me tell you, if you plan on using ANY digital closet app expect to spend around 6-8 hours taking photos of each item in your closet, categorizing them and removing the background. (It took me about 7 hours.)

But if you’re fed up with staring at your closets and struggling to come up with a great outfit (“too many clothes and nothing to wear,” to put it simply) then taking the time to photograph and categorize each item could be worth it.

So, after two weeks of using the app daily here are a few of my thoughts:

First, the LaKoketa app offers a clean, elegant interface that gives its users a place to build their personal closet digitally in a format that they can carry with them. My favorite part? It gives you daily, custom outfit suggestions and even suggests specific pieces you may to purchase in the future.

The app identified that I was low on outerwear pieces and accurately matched my style and suggested a few pieces that I may be interested in. And the best part? You can shop directly from the app!

Another cool thing is that I ended up making use of some of the items in the back of my closet that I would have otherwise forgot about. It also brought to my awareness that I owned about six black and white striped button down shirts and too black bootcut slacks.

Here’s a quick pros and cons breakdown:

Pros:

You can upload your own pictures or search the database for clothes like those in your closet.
The database is the most extensive I’ve seen and easiest to filter. The pictures are linked to actual items, so you can see the designer/brand, price, retailer, etc. instead of just a picture like other closet databases.
You can shop items and add them to your favorites list and before you buy an item you can see if you have something in your existing closet that matches that look.
You can create your own outfit looks and share those for others to see

Cons:

There is a bigger focus on shopping in this app, which may be too tempting for some.
It always makes you chose an accessory or shoe to complete and outfit; which can be a little annoying if you don’t plan on wearing accessories.
The shop feature gives you suggestions based on your style but it doesn’t give you a way to say “no, I don’t like that” and therefore it sometimes shows you an item that isn’t your style.

Overall, I still feel the pros outweigh the cons. The app provides a way to get the most out of what you already have in your closet and lets you choose new pieces that will integrate well into your wardrobe as a whole. Plus the features make it easy and fun to use.
